PitchRate tip: Use your email "out of office" autoreply sparingly.

It's so common: set up an email auto response when you're going to be out of the office for a few days. 

Some even set up an auto response just to communicate that they are in their office and plan to read 

and respond to their email within a pre-determined amount of time. We get those all the time. Think 

of how frustrating that must be for a journalist who is responding to a pitch you just sent out- or a new 

business prospect who is interested in your book, product, or service. It clogs their inbox with an email

(& sometimes a first impression of you) that is of no value to them. Instead, eliminate your "in the office"

email auto responder. And if you're going to be out of the office AND unable to respond to important 

incoming emails, be sure to communicate when you will be able to respond if you choose to set up 

an autoreply. In addition, allow yourself a day or two padding, as you will most likely have lots of catch

up work when you return.
