Awkward - right, Kyle?
Well, that's how it is for the media when you pass go and head directly
for popping the question!
Just like with any relationship, you don't want to skip the courtship.
Shannon (PitchRate's Internet Marketing Genius) shared this. When
he was courting Michelle (Wasabi's Chief Creative Officer), he sent
her a list of simple questions, like:
- Elvis or The Beatles?
- Coffee or tea?
- Cats or dogs?
Why? To learn more about her!
A little corny, I know.
And a bit surprising from Shannon since he is a dude.
But, the point is... you MUST get to know the media you are pitching.
Not doing so is the biggest mistake you can make when trying to
court the media.
So, how do you get to know them?
No, it's not sending them cheesy questions like Shannon did. (Sorry,
Shannon. (He's going to be reading this and I don't want to hurt his
feelings.)) But there is a simple and very powerful tool right at your
fingertips.
It will give you all the information you need. (Hint: you probably use it
every day...)
Drum roll...
The INTERNET! Ta da!
All you need to know about the media is right there at your fingertips.
Yep, right in front of you!
I know this is simple. Most powerful tips are.
So, start searching. Search their name, see if they are on Facebook,
even check out what they're posting.
What do they talk and tweet about?
Simple, right?
EXTRA TIP: Need a little short cut for finding the media?
www.USNPL.com is a free media resource listing all the newspapers,
radio stations, and TV stations in the U.S. Cool, huh?
Tune in to the next email - it's all about getting you in front of the media.
Because I want to make sure that once you get in front of the media,
you don't blow it. I want you to create that beautiful marriage (and get
raving fans of your message)!
Standing by...
Cheers!
